Marrying Off The HIV Kids
Aids runs rampant in Africa. With no traditional foundation for monogamy Africans see a lot of polygamy, divorce, and STD. Throwing money at the problem hasn’t worked so some Nigerian states are offering a new solution in a nation where 4 million of 140 million are HIV positive, the second highest rate in the world.
Apparently the govt. is offering incentives to encourage Aids partners to marry. The thinking is that less infected people will still be on the market, dating and passing on the curse that keeps on giving.
Hmm…
This one has me a bit stumped. I guess there are positives. Of course, we shouldn’t underestimate Nigerians because they’re different than us. I’m sure they’re not gonna go around trying to infect their neighbors like some sequel to Species but they also are smart enough to understand how a virus spreads if education could improve. Apparently preventative measures aren’t as appealing as government solutions.
I’m usually pretty leary of any govt. fix. So far 93 couples have taken advantage of the program. That’s 180 or so vs. 4 million and counting. Now I’m terrible at math and I know politicians quit counting years ago, but isn’t that less than a thousandth of a percent? How much does this program cost? How many people will get married for the benefits and continue sleeping around or getting divorce?
Maybe my holdup has something to do with the children of these couples. How many more will be born with the virus? How many will soon be orphaned? Or maybe they’ll just bring back those old school colonies for the sick like the ones lepers used to frequent.
