Almost A Century Of Reagan

The last man to win the presidency by capturing 49 states would have turned 99 today.  The anti-Reagan movement has tossed and turned over the past two decades, but it’s quite okay to call the 40th president what he was: Super Awesome.

Here’s a small dose from a healthy batch of the kind of medicine America could use these days.  The first clip is taken from his farewell address of January 1989.  The second shortie comes from an old-fashioned press conference when reporters challenged political leaders.

  1. Maybe it’s unfair, but I almost resent Reagan more than many liberal presidents, because Reagan knew better. There are photos of him reading “The Freeman.” He was smart. He explicitly said “government is not the solution, it is the problem.”

And after all that, he was Mister Drug war. He didn’t cut enough government, he didn’t even start. I almost feel like people like that are worse, because they’re hypocrites. Nobody thinks liberals are for smaller government or most freedom. Conservatives like Bush and Reagan just steal the rhetoric.

    • You’re right about hypocrisy in government, both parties. I also have a lot of problems with the “war on drugs.” That said, Bush was farther away from limited govt. than Reagan who did cut a lot of govt fluff and reduce taxes. Of course, Reagan expanded the military in mighty ways. Those price tags were high, but the Soviet Union did cave, and Reagan was the major reason.
