Can you help me finish my 12 Days of Gen X Christmas song? I need #5. And most of the other ones need help too.
16 Candles…Wait, you can’t start there.
12 Brat Pack movies
11 Smurfin’ Smurfs
TEN from Pearl Jam
9 Light Sabres
8 inch hi-top fade
7 Muppets singing
6 mix tapes
5 Missing things / Breakfast Club detainees / ___________________
4 mutant ninja turtles
3 Matrix movies
2Pac rappin / 2 Mario Brothers / 2 Legit to Quit
And a cartridge for my Atari
What should #5 be? What should any number be?
Best suggestion wins free guitar lessons from me.

I did the worst thing and commented via Twitter. Therefore, my 2nd suggestion is Five Gold Rope Chains.
Yeah, but that Golden Girls suggestion was really good!
5 Snorks of Snorkling
You speak truth my friend.
Heh. Cool. You know,in my professional opinion, you have a good voice.:-) Crazy you say? Hey, at least I didn’t gift wrap zombie heads.
Uhh, knowing you, I’d say five bags of skittles but that’s not going with the theme. Five mind numbing chick flicks? Five different jobs? No. Five extra gallons of gasoline so I never get “stuck” on a back road with a gal. Oh, that won’t work. Gen X,Gen X,think. Five awesome Psych episodes. But who could list just five?! I GIVE UP!!! I really wanted those lessons but I’m just not worthy. I got nothin’. Someone else will have to win. Geesh!
Fun as usual,Clay. Thanks for the laugh.
Well, you know I have to keep my real voice a secret. I’ve got enough to do already, and a record deal is the last thing I have time for. LOVE the zombie heads. And Skittles is a great call. So is Psych. Tough pick. You are certainly in the running for my imaginary prize.
I’ve been sitting here for 15 minutes racking my brain and I can’t come up with anything.
Now I’m going to be up all night.
I love that thanks to the internet I can interrupt sleep patterns in other countries.
Love. this. How Troy Dyer of you!
I used up all my brain cells on finishing my novel but I will think about #5 and get back to you. Because I’m 2 Legit 2 Quit, yo.
Nice. I should’ve worked ‘Nona in.
I liked “5 New Kids on the Block.
Also: “5 Rocky films”, “5 Whose the Bosses”, “5 Power Rangers”…
5 Rocky films is another really good one!
Fiiiiiiiive untuned strings! (Guitar, that is…)
Ok, I’m going to bed now.
So glad you came back!
Five…pairs of backwards jeans!!!!
Yes. Kriss Kross will make you Jump! Jump!
Yessss!!!!
Ok my friend, I’m in on this. I’ve gone overboard here and just done a quick review of your lyrics. Most of yours are intact, but here’s what I’d consider doing for a very 80′s “12 Days of Christmas”:
12 Brat Pack movies
11 Smurfs a-smurfin’
10 Denim jackets
9 Bright light sabers
8 Muppets singing
7 Freddy Sequels
6 Cars transforming
5 Hypercolour Tees
4 Ninja Turtles
3 Mix Tapes
2 Plumbing Bros
A cartridge for my Atari
This is a great idea mate! I’m looking forward to your finished product.
Brilliant Christian. The Smurfs change is great. All of these changes are for the better! Thanks
Finished product might have to wait a year though!
Mate, I didn’t get to watch your video when I first posted because YouTube is blocked at my work. Watching it last night was great, I definitely want guitar lessons from you!
Oh and a thought occurred to me today – 5 Rubik’s Cubes?
You’ll put a great tune together man, if I have to wait a year to hear it then it’s a small price to pay.
Thanks Christian!
Then I scrolled down and saw that Rubik’s cubes have already been mentioned! What a talented bunch of people you collaborate with.
6 Athletes Doping
5 Nickelbacks
4 Telemarketers (calling birds, haha, get it?)
3 French Fries
2 Ninja Turtles
…that’s as far as I got! Merry Christmas, Clay!
Those are great Kathy!
AMAZEBALLS. Five slap bracelets? That’s all I got. I’m living in an axe body spray-filled funk.
Five Calico Visions( sadly I don’t remember how it’s spelled!) it was akin to the wii “up” to Atari. That or 5 beta discs…
Nice. I think it’s Caleco. Those rocked! Beta is pretty funny too.
You always know exactly what to say. Slap bracelets are in the mix now.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and the 12 days of Fraggle’s…..
12 minstrels playing
11 Doozers working
10 Rumblebugs rumbling
9 Rock Clingers Clinging
8 Merrgels swimming
7 toe ticklers tickling
6 Thimblebeetles playing
5 Fraggles Dreaming
4 Pipebangers banging
3 Mokey Songs
2 Gorgs a yelling
1 Uncle Matt a Traveling
This is so you Arty! Great one. You have a whole song. The Rumblebugs are rumbling.
How about 5 Jolly Ranchers? 5 Gummy Worms? 5 packs of Fun Dip?
Now I’m hungry…what were we talking about?
Merry Christmas, Clay!
Wendy
You always think of good snacks Wendy. I like those gummy worms for sure.
I vote 5 NKOTB and 2 legit to quit (that was quite brilliant, btw).
I’m not feeling uber creative, but some of the above suggestions are pretty rad.
Thanks Misty. NKOTB is indeed a strong challenger. Rad indeed.
Brat Pack movies and Atari really are Gen Y. Gen X started in 1980. The Atari really was around before us. The first Brat Pack movie came out in 1985 when the oldest of us was merely five-years-old.
Scratch everything I just said. I got my X and Y confused. I need to relearn my alphabet.
I was wondering about that for a second Natalie. Gen X is still in effect into the 90s with Nirvana and grunge and movies like Reality Bites being iconic symbols of Gen X. Thanks for commenting!
But you’re right about the dates. Most people today are putting the starting point for Gen Y around 82-83 even. These things don’t get settled until enough time passes I guess.
5 episodes of ALF. Problem solved.
Also, 9 light sabres? Brilliant. That’s all I want for Christmas….even just one would do.
…but I’m still gonna ask for 9…
Merry Christmas, Clay!
I will see if I can get you a light sabre, but you’ll have to find the other 8 elsewhere
how about “five guitar less-ons????” (or pronounced, “5 g-tar lessins”) great job, Clay!!!! Can’t wait to hear/see the final production!!!!!
Thanks Janet
But I’ll need a lot more than 5 lessons! I’ll have to do this up for next Christmas complete with images and video clips.
5 8-track Tapes . . . Or is that still baby boomers? If it is, than how about . . .
5 New Cassettes
Yet another fun post from Clay Morgan, making Christmas brighter since before I met him in January.
Yup, gotta love our awesome media formats. I would agree that X was all about cassettes. The mix tape is still close to my heart.
I like your post.
Here’s what I got:
5 Cabbage Patch Kids (I also think “kids” is a very appropriate word to drag out)
5 Facts of Life Stars
5 Times I Drooled during Top Gun (before Tom Cruise caught weird in the 90s)
5 plus Huxtables
And…finally…
5 Golden Mullets
Yeah, the Huxtables AND Facts of Life are instant winners. Mullets too!
Of course, we Gen Xers also killed mullets.
True, with the following footnotes.
1. unless you were hockey players
2. you brought in extra hold gel…
Did you just footnote my footnote?
I have been racking my brain since last night to think of 5 something SOMEthings, but to no avail…
Also, I think 8 inch high top fade and a cartridge for my Atari are SPOT ON.
I’m glad you spent time thinking about it. It’s definitely an important issue for our time.
You know, this is just beyond awesome. Merry Christmas bru…and check out my A-Team 12 Days of Christmas, why doncha?
Thanks Heather! I will check it out for sure.
So many comments and so little time to read them to make sure I’m not doubling up. Forgive if I am.
5 Chuck Norris Facts.
Not doubling at all. I’m sure the correct response here is that there aren’t 12 Days of Christmas, there’s just Chuck Norris. Or I suppose Chuck Norris is everyday of Christmas.
Gen X is my thang, yo.
5 Friendship Pins
5 Chicken McNuggets (doesn’t flow…but I’m certain they came with 5 back when I last had them in 1984)
5 day-glo bracelets
5 Square Pegs shows (and then it was cancelled…sigh)
I like the way you roll homey. 5 Chicken Nuggets actually works well if you take the Mc off which we can do since no one’s watching.
5 Martha Quinns? 5 hoverboards? 5 vintage Swatches?
Hover board=awesome!
5 Golden Grahams (I had to wiki-confirm they came out in the late ’70s)
I obviously really want guitar lessons.
I think that for this song to be truly a “Gen X” Christmas song number 5 should be…”5 Kevin Smith films”. It seems only fitting. Oh and loved the video. Typical Clay. Lol.
K-Smith could def get a nod and that’s a good one. Thanks Ash!
Five Sit and Spins?
Five holes in my jeans?
Five Rubics Cubes?
…four Simon Says, three Care Bears, two Fashion Plates, and a Trapper Keepeer under my tree?
Sit and spin! Yes. Trapper Keeper also a legend. Thanks Lunar!
That was the most delightfully awkward video introduction I’ve ever seen. I hope Santa can fit guitar lessons for you in his bag. *snort!*
I may not have your musical prowess, but I do have three decades of practice at being delightfully awkward.
Alright, you sweet talked me with “musical prowess”– here’s your missing line: Five, Party of.
You’re welcome.
5 is alive (As in Johnny 5. As in Short Circuit. Maybe not.)
5 laser disks?
5 jelly bracelets?
5 Swatch watch guards?
I covet your zombie head ornaments. I totally had a Smeagol moment when I saw them (my preciousessss!). I’m better now.
5 bottles of Zima!
Johnny 5 and Zima? You are a Gen X queen. Or princess. Wait, are you in another castle?
This is my choice — I think it’s brilliant. You could sing it like “John-nee-FIVE-is-uh-LIVE!
I love The Usual Suspects! It’s a shame it doesn’t work. Love the zombie heads!
Thanks Thoughtsy
Um why isn’t it “9-0-2-1-0″ instead of 9 Light Sabres?
Okay, that is seriously AWESOME. It’s going in the final draft. Genius.
The creativity genius in my mind has retired for the evening, but it looks like you’ve got plenty of great options to choose from.
That wasn’t bad for your first time playing guitar. You at least look like you can play. Thanks for being funny – I needed a laugh tonight.
Ooh, six should be changed to “Six, Blossom’s friend”
I like that one!
