MMM2 – Round 2 – Day 2

Halfway through the first day of Round 2, and I gotta say we have some surprises brewing. Will the upsets be upsetting?

You’ll have to decide that just like you’ll have to decide these final Round 2 choices to determine who will make it into the Sweet Sixteen. Voting for that round will all take place between Friday and Saturday by the way. That means we’ll have our Elite 8 set by this Sunday. Remember you can keep an eye on each round as well as the bracket by clicking the appropriate links on the MMM2 sidebar.

Don’t forget that the winner of both this tournament and the bracket challenge gets a watch from Hello Somebody, an organization you might like to take a minute to check out. If international issues interest you please take some time to check out a couple videos from the Brilliant Hans Rosling over at Clay-Morgan.com, especially if you enjoy some optimism about where the world is heading.

Voting for these matchups ends tomorrow at noon. I’ll have a recap ready to go by tomorrow evening. If you’ve already advanced to the next round or anticipate doing so please check your email for an update from me.

Happy deciding! Some of these picks are ROUGH. Continue Reading…

MMM2 – Round 2 – Day 1

I am loving the MMM this year. So many good characters are already gonzo and the decisions only get tougher in this second round.

For the next two days we will reduce the field to our Sweet Sixteen. You will pick your favorite characters once again, but this time we’ve added some of the best quotes from the field in case you’ve forgotten some of the words that make the protagonists so iconic.

Voting is on a 24 hour cycle again. Round 2 will be over Thursday then right into Round 3 on Friday. You can keep track of everything easily with that sidebar to the right.

In case you missed it, here’s a video recap of round 1 including a tearjerking farewell to those we’ve lost along the way. Okay, so I’m not exactly going to challenge the Talking Dead folks at AMC, but I’ll get better along the way.

Speaking of video, here’s a little something to get you fired up just in case you need the proper motivation before voting.

Get after it. Continue Reading…

MMM2-Round One Recap (In Memoriam)

What a fabulous start to March Movie Madness 2! That first week was fast-paced with gobs of people getting their two cents in as to who is the greatest protagonist in this year’s field. For a dramatic break down of all the action take a look at this video.

[Note: You should watch in full screen since I will never understand how to make Adobe render my videos without all that black border.]

Who’s FIRED UP?!?!

For those of you heading on to Round Two don’t forget to check your email and get quotes in for this week’s defense.

What do you think about how Round One went?

How will Round Two go?

MMM2 – Round 1 – Day 4

What a week we’ve had for Round 1 of this bizzzness.

The voting has been feverish, the smack talk smacky.

We’ve got one more day to go in the early round.

One of the ideas we kicked around for this year was doing a guy/girl split in characters between this year and next. We wondered how many female characters might be selected. Well, after three rounds I find it interesting that almost half of the 24 picks to advance are women. Girl power eh? Trish Loye wrote about female action heroes just the other day. Check it out if you have a minute.

Here’s the question of the day. I’m already thinking about ways to make MMM better even if it’s next year. But perhaps we can experiment this year. I’ve said that Round 2 defenses will consist of favorite character quotes. What else could we use for these short writeups? Images? Video? Let’s toss around some ideas in the comments.

I’m happy to say that I’ll be much more present going forward because I made my FINAL deadline for my book this morning. Exhausted, I am, if I may speak like Yoda for a minute. But happy.

So off we go with the final matches in Round 1! Give me those ideas in the comments but of course I also love to see the good-natured jabs. Good luck. Continue Reading…

MMM2 – Round 1 – Day 3

Alright bracket busters, day 3 of March Movie Madness 2 is coming at ya. Beware the Ides of March.

We’ll be updating the bracket once again just as soon as possible. Yesterday was really fun. In the midst of a crazy busy day I enjoyed watching the #MMM2 thread on TweetDeck. You guys are cracking me up with comments all over the internet!

IMPORTANT NOTE before we go any further. For those of you who have already advanced to the second round (as well as those of you who might), I want to let you know in advance how you should be preparing. If I don’t do this now then we’ll all be scrambling on Sunday or Monday night.

The way you will defend your selection in Round 2 is by providing your favorite quotes from the character you are promoting. You can do as many quotes as your like but keep it under the 50 word limit again.

You don’t need to worry about submitting any of this yet, as I’ll have another easy form of some kind ready to go later on. I just want you to know what to expect if you’re expecting.

Congrats to all those who have advanced so far! Half of the field is set for Round 2, and we’ve got some more great matchups coming today including what might be the most intriguing matchup in the entire tourney. You’ll see. Happy voting! Continue Reading…

MMM2 – Round 1 – Day 2

Fantastic start to March Movie Madness 2 yesterday! I’m loving the banter and these crazy matchups. We’re just getting warmed up. Here’s what’s going to happen next.

We close the polls on Day 1 and update the master bracket over at Challonge ASAP this afternoon. Congrats to the winners. Once we do that update and reveal the winners from the first group of round 1 the bracket will probably lock and not allow anyone else to fill it out online. You can still print one for yourself and keep track though.

Like last year, I won’t reveal the percentage each winner won by until after the entire tournament is complete.

Also, let us know if you are writing posts or updates about the contest anywhere. The best way for us to all be looped in is by using #MMM2 on Twitter, but you can certainly use the comments section here as well. By the way, introduce yourself on Twitter and take the opportunity to follow each other. A lot of us met last year during this tournament and it was WAY smaller.

So Day 2 is up and running. I have a brilliant friend doing all this hard work for me, so I’m just seeing the slate for today’s voting along with you. It’s gonna be a wild one! Get after it. Continue Reading…

March Movie Madness 2 is OPEN!

Move aside college basketball. This tournament is gonna makes dolphins cry ya’ll.

Since everyone wants to see the bracket first that’s what I’ll give you. We entered the data once and randomly generated the entire tournament. Before we move on you can

See the bracket now!

And we’ve also created a contest within the tournament! ANYONE can participate by filling out your bracket for the March Movie Madness. Simply sign up for free at Challonge and fill out a bracket with us for a chance to win your own watch from Hello Somebody. Big thanks to Jared Hollier who came up with the idea and offered the prize. Check out his site for more info. Now anyone can play whether you are in the tournament or not!

You can make predictions at any time, but in order to qualify for the pick ‘em prize, brackets need to be filled out by tomorrow at NOON which coincides with end of voting for these first matches of round 1.

When I decided to try to do a bracket challenge with 64 people I knew my mind must have officially reached the consistency of cheese in a blender stuck on grind. But here we are. Thanks for joining us, whether it’s as a contestant or just to vote on who the most EPIC movie protagonist of all-time (or at least of the ones entered here) is.

But enough from me and my glarbled cheese brains. Here’s how this works. Continue Reading…

Last Call for March Movie Madness! Who’s In?

UPDATE: The field is full and contest is set! Sorry to anyone who just missed getting in. You can still use this event as a great way to network with people of the interwebs.

~*~*~*~

Okay movie fans. The March Movie Madness tournament starts Tuesday AT NOON. We have NINE EIGHT FIVE TWO ONE NO SPOTS LEFT.

The field is SUPER intriguing. Can’t wait to see how the random seedings end up in the bracket.

If we don’t get to 64 entries I am still launching the tournament. What that means is if we don’t get a full field of 64 that the bracket will also randomly select some people to get a first round bye. Not ideal, especially in a single elimination tournament which is already unfair enough as a result of strong contenders drawing bad first round matches.

It is what it is. Let’s make it a field of 64.

I am driving 8 hours to Pittsburgh throughout the day Monday. I will make 2 pit stops and update the field here. If we happen to go past 64 while I am en route then I will keep the entries that came in first according to the time stamp on the submission form.

Tell your friends to grab one of the last few spots! Remember, winner gets a sweet watch from Hello Somebody as we also use this tournament to promote an organization that aims to do good things like provide clean water to parts of the world that need it.

Use the OFFICIAL MARCH MOVIE MADNESS 2 FORM to enter!

Voting begins Tuesday at noon!

Leave any questions in the comments.

MARCH MOVIE MADNESS 2!!!

***UPDATE!!: The tournament has already begun. We are no longer taking submissions. ***

Okay gang, it’s time for

The idea for March Movie Madness started out on a whim last year and became an eduClaytion sensation as thousands of votes were cast by readers to pick the best of a crop of movies selected by some of us who thought it might be fun. Well, this new site needs broken in proper, so I’m bringing the Triple M back like Hammer Pants. Check the deets.

WHAT (is this?): A tournament of movie heroes/protagonists representing 64 entrants of which you could be one. Each contestant will select a movie hero (man/woman/other) that they love and write no more that 50 words on said character.

Matchups between the assembled movie characters will be entered in a bracket randomly created and organized by Challonge.com. Rounds of our contest will loosely mirror the March Madness NCAA College Basketball tournament which begins next week.  Your character will go head to head in a simple poll to be determined by readers. You must explain why you’re individual rocks the most in less than 50 words (and keep the language family blog style please). Each round is single elimination. Just like in Highlander, there can be only one.

WHY (should you play?): Because it’s fun and you’ll meet some new peeps. Last year it was like Love Connection up in here. Contestants also get to rock their website (although you don’t need a website to enter!) for as many rounds as they survive. So you will make new connections and grab some exposure for your site. But there’s also a sweet prize.

THE PRIZE: There’s an organization called Hello Somebody that aims to feed and educate children in order to break the cycle of poverty in some tough places around the world. Learn more about this organization’s story here. Hello Somebody also offers these really sweet watches for sale. Each one purchased helps provide important necessities like clean water to people who need it.

The winner gets a watch, whichever color/model you like. If the watch isn’t your thing it still makes a great gift for someone you know, and the money goes to a good cause.

RECAP: So here’s a chance to have some fun and do some good. The movie debates got fun last year, especially as our competition spilled over onto other sites. It’ll be like summer camp all over again only without the kid who refused to take a shower or change his shirt all week.

Important:

  1. If you enter the tournament be sure to let us know who you are taking in the comments section. Priority goes on a first come, first served basis! If you’re top pick is taken you’ll at least know by perusing the comments.
  2. I have no idea what kind of response to expect since I’ve been all Adam Absent from the interwebs for the past couple months. If we happen to get more than 64 people interested then I have a pseudo-idea about what to do, but let’s focus on filling all 64 spots first.
  3. If I forgot anything or you still have questions then ask away in the comments section.

HOW TO ENTER!
Use the form below. I’m hoping that this will be organized and streamlined (hence the 50 word MAX). The sooner all the spots fill up the sooner I can unveil the bracket! Voting begins next week. Let’s do this.

Who are you taking?!?! Let us know in the comments.

The 5 Year Engagement

Not only did Kevin Haggerty have some fun interviewing me recently; he also opened my eyes to an upcoming film with a unique marketing plan. The 5 Year Engagement is using transmedia, a new form of storytelling that is changing the way we absorb stories and consume culture.

Okay, full disclosure: The movie stars a certain actress named Emily Blunt who I may or may not have mentioned a couple times*. But I’m not here to blather and blush and blubber and gush. There’s plenty of time to do that later**.

The fictional couple in The 5 Year Engagement (co-starring Jason Segel) even has a wedding blog that is building towards the big event. Some of this stuff is really clever.

I’ve been wondering how this approach impacts marketing and how writers can use this kind of creativity in the 21st century. It just happens that my friend Ellie–whose superskills include cooking and being awesome–has been delving into the world of transmedia like no one I know. I asked her for some thoughts on this emerging area.

~*~*~*~

Ellie’s thoughts:
I had lots of misconceptions about transmedia when I first learned heard about it (it’s much more than putting a wig, makeup, and heels on your book). Transmedia is not to be confused with multimedia or cross media, it’s not simply combining media. It’s creating an experience. Henry Jenkins, MIT media studies professor says, “coordinated use of storytelling across platforms can make the characters more compelling,” and Stephen Dinehart says, “ ”true” transmedia is designed in preproduction with the intent of immersion.”

Transmedia evokes all your senses, immerses you in the story. Examples: Continue Reading…
